Style Library Conflicts

Pretty much every business has a template that shows this error message, but most people just click OK and carry on.

What are styles?
Styles exist in many different environments in Inventor. They hold information that you want to standardise and use again and again.
For instance, in the drawing environment it holds your dimension styles, font setups, layers, leader appearance etc. In part files it holds lighting and text styles. Assemblies, appearances and sheet metal styles include unfold rules.

These styles can be saved in two places:
  • Locally in the template itself.
  • Centrally in the style library (this should be the same library your colleagues share)

What does the error mean?
What this dialogue basically says is, that the styles in the template do not match the central library styles.

How do you fix it?
Open your template file. The location of this is shown under 'Folder Options' in the 'Projects' window on the 'Get Started' ribbon.

Once the template is open, go to the 'Manage' ribbon, 'Styles and Standards' tab.

There's three options:

Save
Any styles in the template that do not match the central library will be saved to the central library. This means that styles with the same name will be overwritten. This could potentially ruin your company's style library, so make sure it is correct before doing this.

Note: if the save button is greyed out, your styles library is not set to read/write in your project file.

Update
This gets fresh copies of the styles from the central library and overwrites the ones in your template. You will get a choice of which styles to overwrite before you commit to this.

I find his option is very useful when appearances have been changed and you are opening an old assembly for rendering purposes. You can update all the appearances in the assembly before doing your render.

Purge
This will remove all styles from your template that are not currently in use.

Fixed!
After performing one of the above, save your template and
you should no longer see the error message.
